BOX SCORE
St. Davids, Pa. (Dec. 1, 2007) – Junior forward
Terrence Shawell (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) scored five straight points to cap a 6-0 run late in the game that carried Alvernia College to a 63-55 win over Eastern University in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Men's Basketball opener for both teams Saturday afternoon.
Junior
Tim Walters (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Wood) knocked down a free throw to break a 47-all tie with just more than nine minutes to play, and Shawell scored on back-to-back possessions earning a 3-point play on the second which put the Crusaders (3-2, 1-0 PAC) up 53-47 with 6:16 to go.
Shawell finished the night with a team-high 15 and Walters added 14. Eastern got a team high 14 from sophomore Jason Reels (Paterson, N.J./Hawthorne Christian).
The teams traded points over the next 76 seconds before Eastern senior Matt Flanagan (Dallas, Pa./Bishop O'Reilly) knocked down his third 3 of the day to cut the lead in half. Alvernia pushed its lead back to seven with buckets from
Matt King (Phoenixville, Pa./St. Pius X) and junior
David Washington (Durham, N.C./Northern Durham), but a tenacious Eastern defense and attack on the offensive glass helped pull the hosts back to within four.
Sophomore
Zach Westmoreland (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West), who finished with 13 points, atoned for a couple of late turnovers by sinking two from the free throw line for a six-point lead with 1:13 to play, and Eastern missed three different looks at the other end before Shawell ended the scoring with a pair of free throws.
Despite shooting a low percentage King was solid for the Crusaders finishing with nine points, 13 rebounds, and four assists. Junior center
Tyrone Bradley (Chester, Pa./Chester) finished the night with eight points and 10 boards, nine of them coming on the offensive end.
Alvernia will travel to Immaculata on Monday for a rematch of the 2007 PAC Championship game.
