BOX SCORE

Reading
, Pa. (September 13, 2007) – The Alvernia College Crusaders opened their Pennsylvania Athletic Conference season with a convincing 4-1 victory over the Gwynedd-Mercy College Griffins. With the win, Alvernia climbs above .500 (3-2, 1-0 PAC), and Gwynedd-Mercy falls to 2-2 (0-1 PAC).

The Crusaders got on the board first and never looked back. In the 16th minute, senior Dawn Beiswenger (Denver, PA/Garden Spot HS) knocked down a high shot from freshman Ashley Tatangelo (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin HS) and tapped it in for Alvernia's first goal. Alvernia added to their lead 12 minutes later when senior Shayna Clark (Leesport, PA/Schuykill Valley) weaved her way through the Griffin defense and connected for her second goal of the season when she placed it just over the goalie's stick.

Gwynedd-Mercy fought hard to get one on the board before half-time, and sophomore Amanda Reppert (Oley, PA/Boyertown HS) tallied her fifth goal of the season as she recovered her own rebound and placed one high in the net for the Griffin's first goal.

Less than five minutes into the second half Alvernia added another goal when sophomore Janelle Lynch (Macungie, PA/Brandywine Heights) drilled a shot from the top of the circle that was directed in by senior Amber Landis (Ephrata, PA/Ephrata HS) for her third goal of the season. Alvernia put their fourth goal on the board when Clark connected for her second goal of the game with a direct shot from the top of the circle in the 59th minute.

Alvernia had the edge in shots with 23, compared to the Griffin's five. Gwynedd-Mercy managed only one corner while Alvernia had 12, six in each half. Crusader goalie Audrey Hoffman (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) had two saves.

Alvernia will return to action Sat. Sept. 15 in a conference game against Cabrini at home at 1:00 pm.
