Crusaders Upset Wilkes 4-2

Alvernia Downs #18 Wilkes Behind A Strong First Half

Reading, PA (Nov. 1, 2008) - The Crusader's took a 3-0 lead into halftime en route to a 4-2 upset of visiting Wilkes University (15-2, 6-1 Freedom) this afternoon in Freedom Conference action.  Freshman Sarah George (West Chester, PA/WC Bayard Rustin) netted two goals for Alvernia for her third and fourth goal of the season.  With the win Alvernia improves to 10-9 and an even 4-4 in the Freedom Conference.

George got Alvernia on the board in the 12th minute after receiving a cross from Katy Eby (New Holland, PA/Garden Spot) and quickly redirecting it to give the Crusaders the 1-0 lead.  Eby would follow with a goal of her own in the 24th minute after she dribbled up the left side of the field and lifted a beauty shot over the goalie.  Alvernia would wrap-up their first half scoring when Janelle Lynch (Macungie, PA/Brandywine) drilled one into the back of the net on a pass from Samantha Landis (Watsontown, PA/Warrior Run).

The first half saw Alvernia out shoot the Colonels 11-5 and hold the advantage in penalty corners 9-6.  With their first half goals Lynch and Eby now share the team lead with 12 goals each.

Wilkes battled hard in the second half out shooting Alvernia 10-7 and earning eight corners to Alvernia's three but Tonya Rutt (Ephrata, PA/Ephrata) helped keep them at bay with three defensive saves.  Wilkes managed to pull within two goals when Devon McKay scored in the 39th minute.  But the Crusaders would regain the three point spread when George netted her second goal of the game in the 47th minute.  Wilkes added their second goal of the game as time was winding down in the 69th minute off the stick of Gina Elmy.

Althouugh the Crusaders are out of the conference play-offs, they will await their fate as ECAC selections are announced.
