BOX SCORE
Reading, Pa. (Nov. 18, 2008) - Alvernia University (0-2) put three players in double-figures including senior guard
David Washington (Durham, N.C./Northern Durham) who led the way with a career-high 20 points, but it wasn't enough to overcome a 52-point second half by Albright College (1-0) who took an 87-75 decision Tuesday evening in non-conference men's basketball action at the Bollman Center.
Alvernia had a pair of brief two-point leads in the first four minutes of play, but Albright pieced together a 15-3 run that put the hosts up 20-10 midway through the first half. Alvernia cut that down to two on a couple of occasions and trailed by four at the break, 35-31.
Albright went up 11 points in the early parts of the second half and held a 10-point edge with just under five minutes to play. Alvernia's final push cut the gap to seven points with two minutes to go, but got no closer and Albright pulled away for the 12-point win.
The Lions pushed their modest win streak to two games in the series and improved to 7-10 all time against Alvernia.
Junior
Andre Murphy led the Lions with 15 points,
Andrew Pomager scored 14, and
Phil Hall added a dozen. Alvernia seniors
Jeff Amponsah (Far Rockaway, N.Y./Carson Long Military Academy) and
Tyrone Bradley (Chester, Pa./Chester) both reached double figures with 11 points apiece.
Alvernia will return home for the home-opener on Friday evening. The Crusaders will host Penn State-Berks at 8:00 as part of the Tom Masano/Sheraton Reading Tip-Off Tournament. The College of New Jersey and Gwynedd-Mercy will tangle in the 6:00 opener with the consolation and championship games at 1:00 and 3:00 Saturday afternoon.
