Alvernia Comes Up Short In 14 Innings

Centenary Takes First Of Three-Game Set

BOX SCORE

Reading, Pa. (Mar. 28, 2008) – Alvernia College senior Dale Curry (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) knocked in game-tying runs in the ninth and 12th innings, but couldn't come up with his third straight as Centenary College took a 6-5 win over Alvernia in 14 innings Friday afternoon in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference baseball action at Alvernia.

Curry drove in a pair of runs in the sixth inning that cut a 4-0 Centenary lead in half and scored later in the frame to pull within one. He beat out a potential game-ending double play ball in the ninth that allowed the Crusaders fourth run to score forcing extra innings.

Centenary took a 5-4 lead with an unearned run in the top of the 12th inning, and Curry quickly erased it smacking his third home run of the season out to left knotting the game at 5-all. He grounded out to lead off the home half of the 14th inning and Centenary finally made a lead stand taking the first of a three-game set that will conclude tomorrow with an afternoon doubleheader at Centenary.

Centenary plated the first run of the game in the first inning with a leadoff walk, a stolen base, and a run-scoring double. The Cyclones scored a second run in the fourth and two more in the sixth to build the 4-0 lead.

Alvernia freshman Zach Grey (York, Pa./York Catholic) gave up four runs in six innings with eight strikeouts and was taken off the hook by Curry in the ninth. Freshmen Jeff Knosp (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) and Austin Rohrbach (Maxatawny, Pa./Kutztown) combined to throw three scoreless innings, and senior Andrew Long (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) gave up his first runs of the year going five innings and suffered the loss.

Curry finished the day 3-for-7 with two runs and four RBIs. Tomorrow's doubleheader is scheduled for a noon start.
