Augusta, N.J. (Mar. 29, 2008) – Alvernia College freshmen
Chris Stoudt (West Lawn, Pa./Governor Mifflin) and
Chuck Nicholas (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) both shut down the Centenary offense as the Crusaders swept a doubleheader to take the final two of a three-game series Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference baseball action at Skylands Park.
Stoudt threw five and a third innings in the opener holding the Cyclones (5-12, 1-5 PAC) to one run on five hits while striking out three. Junior
Steve Geisel (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) finished out the 5-1 win with one and two-third innings of hitless work.
Nicholas went six shutout innings giving up just three hits while striking out five. Freshman
Matt Barrett (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) threw the final inning in a 13-1 win giving up a run on two walks and a single.
Alvernia scored all the runs it needed in the second inning of game one scoring twice on four base hits. Senior catcher
Dale Curry (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) led off with a single and scored on a
James Geosits (Wyomissing, Pa./Wilson) doubles. Geosits came around for the game-winner three batters later on a
Steve DeBarberie (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) single.
The Crusaders (16-6, 6-2 PAC) tacked on three more runs in the sixth inning on three hits and an error. The big blow a two-run triple off the bat of senior second baseman
Corey Berghardt (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown). Curry and DeBarberie both finished game one with a pair of base hits.
Alvernia got on the board early in game two when senior
Tim Carroll (Bensalem, Pa./Conwell Egan) walked to lead off the game, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a Stoudt groundout.
The offense sent 12 batters to the plate in the fourth inning with each of the first eight coming around to score. Stoudt walked to lead it off and then five straight singles ensued before
Brendan Barry's (Franklin Square, Pa./St. Mary's) RBI walk and Carroll's two-run double.
Alvernia scored four more runs in the fifth for a 13-0 lead getting three straight singles to open the frame and a two-run double from Barry.
Alvernia is scheduled to travel to Gwynedd-Mercy on Sunday for a reschedule game with the Griffins.
