Ft. Pierce, Fla. (Mar. 3, 2008) – Alvernia College slugged four home runs and five different players collected three hits or more in a 21-hit attack that led to a 17-6 win over Lebanon Valley Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference, spring break baseball game.
The Dutchmen struck first scoring four runs in the top half of the first, but Alvernia answered with five runs in the home half of the first. Sophomore
Pete Mazzie (Barto, Pa./Boyertown) led off with a single to right, one of his four hits on the day. Freshman
Chris Stoudt (West Lawn, Pa./Governor Mifflin) reached on an error with one out and the offense followed with four straight hits.
James Geosits (Wyomissing, Pa./Wilson) drove an RBI double to left-center and
Dale Curry (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) followed with a single to plate Geosits. Sophomore
Steve Bealer (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) reached on a single and
Reid Martin (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) plated a pair with a single to center.
Leb Val took the lead back with in the top of the second inning scoring twice on two hits and two walks. Freshman pitcher Chris Nicholas (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown), the eventual winner, relieved
Mike Lloyd (Reading, Pa./Central Catholic) with no one out and the bases loaded, and retired the Dutchmen on a shallow fly ball to right and a ground ball double play.
Alvernia tied the score on a solo home run from
Steve Bealer (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) in the third inning, and the offense continued to roll as Nicholas shut down the LVC lineup the rest of the way finishing with 8.0 innings, two walks, and four strikeouts.
Alvernia scored the go-ahead run on a Geosits home run to center in the fourth and added another run on two base hits and an error before the inning was out. Geosits drove in two more and scored in the fifth, and Mazzie and Curry both hit two-run homers in the sixth.
Alvernia will play a junior varsity game against Lansing Community College on Wednesday and play Elizabethtown on Thursday.
