BOX SCORE (Game Two)
Ft. Pierce, Fla. (Mar. 3, 2008) – Alvernia College gave up seven unearned runs in the opener and freshman hurler
Zach Grey (York, Pa./York Catholic) was lights out in game two as the Crusaders split a spring-break doubleheader with St. Scholastica Monday afternoon in non-conference baseball action.
Senior starter
Pete Fernandez (Waldwick, N.J./Bogota) threw well in game one, but got little support from his defense which committed three errors in the first two innings leading to seven unearned runs. The Crusaders (4-4) cut into the lead with three runs in the third inning. Sophomore
Steve Bealer (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) plated the first run with a sac fly to left field and
James Geosits (Wyomissing, Pa./Wilson) followed with a two-out, two-run double.
Scholastica scored five runs to just one for Alvernia over the next three innings and led 12-4 after six innings. The Crusaders refused to go quietly with Geosits drawing a bases loaded walk with one out and senior
Dale Curry (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) following with a two-run single, but a strikeout and a groundout ensued to give Scholastica the win.
Sophomore
Pete Mazzie (Barto, Pa./Boyertown) singled and scored on a Curry single to open the scoring in game two, and Grey was lights out giving up just one run over six innings as the Crusaders built an 8-1 lead with four runs in the sixth. Bealer delivered the big blow for Alvernia with a bases clearing triple.
Senior
Andrew Long (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) pitched an adventurous seventh to close the game. He surrendered two straight singles and a walk to load the bases with no one out, but struck out the next two and ended the game with a comebacker.
Mazzie was 2-for-3 in game two with three runs scored. Geosits was 3-for-6 on the day with four RBIs, and Curry was 3-for-7 with five RBIs. Grey game up one run on three hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
