BOX SCORE (Game Two)
Reading, Pa. (Apr. 12, 2008) – Sophomore outfielder
Steve DeBarberie (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) stayed red hot for with five hits in five at-bats including three homers and two doubles adding six RBIs to yesterday's eight as Alvernia finished a three game sweep of Eastern University with 8-3 and 14-2 wins on Saturday in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference baseball action at Alvernia.
The Eagles are certainly pleased to not face DeBarberie again this regular season. He has eight base hits in his last eight official at-bats and with a pair of walks worked in has reached base in 10 straight plate appearances. He homered in his last at-bat at Eastern on Friday and went deep in both of his first two at-bats on Saturday. He finished the series 10-for-12 at the plate with eight runs scored and 14 RBIs.
DeBarberie's second and third inning homers in game one on Saturday helped Alvernia build a 6-0 lead, and the Crusaders cruised behind freshman lefty
Chris Stoudt (West Lawn, Pa./Governor Mifflin). Stoudt went six innings allowing three runs on four hits with five walks and four strikeouts.
After the Eagles had cut the lead in half with two in the fifth and another run in the sixth, Alvernia tacked on a pair of runs in the home half of the sixth when
Steve Bealer (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) drove in a run with a single to center and
Tim Carroll (Bensalem, Pa./Conwell Egan) stole home on a double steal with two out.
Junior
Steve Geisel (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland), who appeared in both games, pitched a perfect seventh to close out the win.
Eastern got a run without a hit in the first inning of game two off freshman starter
Chuck Nicholas (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown), and Alvernia sent 10 batters to the plate in the second scoring five runs for a 5-1 lead. Freshman
Reid Martin (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) singled home a pair to give Alvernia the lead and classmate
David Zimmerman (Merrick, N.Y./Beumore JFK), who finished 4-for-4 in his first collegiate start, followed with another run scoring single. Zimmerman and
Tim Ahlquist (Millville, N.J./Millville) came around to score on a Stoudt single and the Crusaders had a lead they never relinquished.
Eastern scored another single run in the third and the score remained 5-2 until Alvernia put nine on the board in the sixth. DeBarberie doubled and scored to start the inning and Stoudt kept it going with a bases-clearing triple midway through before DeBarberie closed the scoring with a three-run homer.
Stoudt, DeBarberie, Martin, Ahlquist, and junior
James Geosits (Wyomissing, Pa./Wilson) all finished game two with a pair of hits to go with Zimmerman's four. The Crusaders had 26 hits on the day and finished the series with 50 hits over three games.
Alvernia will play a non-conference game at home against Rutgers-Newark on Monday.
