Crusaders Turn Nine Free Passes Into Runs

BOX SCORE

Elizabethtown, Pa. (Apr. 15, 2008) – Alvernia College defeated Elizabethtown College 9-7 Tuesday afternoon in non-conference baseball action with none of the batters who scored reaching on a base hit.

Freshman Tim Ahlquist (Millville, N.J./Millville) walked and scored in the first inning and Etown answered with a run in the bottom of the first. Three straight batters walked to load the bases for Alvernia in the second and after a lineout to third, Tim Carroll (Bensalem, Pa./Conwell Egan) and Ahlquist both drew RBI walks to put Alvernia up 3-1.

Freshman Chris Stoudt (West Lawn, Pa./Governor Mifflin) lifted a sacrifice fly to right and junior James Geosits (Wyomissing, Pa./Wilson) followed with a two-run single as the Crusaders posted five runs in the inning on just one base hit.

The Blue Jays led off the fifth with a walk and brought the runner around, but those two runs were all they got off Alvernia starter Mike Lloyd (Reading, Pa./Central Catholic) who went five innings to pick up his first win.

Corey Berghardt (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) walked with one out in the sixth and Carroll followed with a free pass. Ahlquist, who had already walked twice and scored both times loaded the bases being hit by a pitch. Stoudt then got a pitch to hit and drove in two with a double before Geosits put Alvernia up 9-2 with a sac fly.

Etown mounted a comeback with four runs in the eighth on four hits and a costly Alvernia error. They put another run on the board in the ninth against Alvernia closer Andrew Long (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown), but long closed out his third save with his 24th strikeout of the year.

Alvernia will open its final conference series of the season hosting Marywood on Friday at 3:00.
