Reading, PA (Sept. 7, 2008) – The Crusader field hockey team improved to 2-2 on the season with a non-conference win against Susquehanna University this afternoon at Alvernia College. Alvernia fell behind 1-0 in the first half then relied on a fierce shot from Janelle Lynch (Macungie, PA/Brandywine) to tie the game and an overtime game winner from freshman Sarah George (Westchester, PA/WC Bayard Rustin). With the loss, Susquehanna falls to 1-3.
The first half saw Alvernia fire off seven shots and earn two corners before Susquehanna managed their first shot. The half continued the same way with Alvernia out shooting Susquehanna 13-3 and earning eight penalty corners to Susquehanna's one. Perhaps Alvernia's best chance to score came in the 28th minute when junior Lynch drilled in a shot that was denied by the Susquehanna goalie and freshman George quickly earned the rebound and directed back towards the cage, but the Susquehanna goalie was able to again make the save.
Susquehanna took the lead in the 22nd minute when Andrea Fiori battled for a rebound and lifted it into the left side of the cage for her first goal of the season. Susquehanna goalie Erin Ferguson made five saves in the first half to hold Alvernia scoreless.
The second half saw Alvernia again out shoot Susquehanna with seven shots to Susquehanna's three. They also held the advantage in penalty corners 6-2. Alvernia managed to even the score on their third corned of the second half when Lynch received a perfect pass in from sophomore Kaitlin Prutzman (Hamburg, PA/Hamburg) and blistered a shot into the back of the net for her second goal of the season. The score remained knotted at one through regulation.
Alvernia continued their trend out shooting Susquehanna 5-4 in overtime and finally netting the game winner in the 84th minute. George battled hard to win the ball at the top of the circle; she then dribbled the ball in forcing the Susquehanna goalie to leave the cage before she fired a quick shot that landed just inside the right corner of the cage.
The Crusaders will look to begin their first winning streak of the season on Wed. Sept. 10th when they travel to Gwynedd-Mercy College at 4:00 pm.
