Reading, Pa. (Jan. 24, 2009) - Manhattanville College (11-6, 7-2) scored the first eight points of the game and never trailed in a 71-58 win over Alvernia University (8-9, 5-4) Saturday afternoon in Freedom Conference men's basketball action at the Physical Education Center.
The Valiants got a pair of 3s from
Jay Ferriere (Huntington Station, N.Y.) and put eight points up in the first two minutes. Alvernia answered with seven straight capped by a 3 from
Tim Walters (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Wood), but couldn't take away the lead.
Manhattanville pushed the gap to 15 points with four minutes left in the half and settled for a nine-point lead at the break, 38-29.
Alvernia was within five points on three different occasions in the second half, but Manhattanville got seven straight from
Lamar Glass (Dallas, Tex.) to built the lead to 12 with 4:28 to play and held it above double digits the rest of the way.
Angela Laroche(Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the way for Manhattanville with 16 points and Alvernia senior
Jeff Amponsah (Far Rockaway, N.Y./Carson Long Military Acad.) finished one shy of a career-high with 17 points to lead the Crusaders. Walters also reached double figures with 14 points on 6-of-14 shooting.
Alvernia will take a few days off before heading to Doylestown on Wednesday for a women's and men's doubleheader at Delaware Valley at 6:00 and 8:00 p.m.
