Late Goal Decider For Etown

Lynch Scores A Pair For Alvernia

BOX SCORE

Reading, Pa. (Oct. 3, 2009) - Elizabethtown College (8-2, 2-0) scored on its 12th corner of the game with exactly four minutes to play in a 3-2 win over Alvernia University (5-5, 0-2) Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference field hockey action at Schlager Memorial Field.

The visiting Blue Jays opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, but Alvernia struck back with a pair of first half goals from senior forward Janelle Lynch (Macungie, Pa./Brandywine Heights).

Lynch's first goal, her fourth of the season, came on a penalty corner.  Sam Landis (Watsontown, Pa./Warrior Run) took the insert at the top of the circle and dished to Lynch who drove home the equalizer in the 30th minute.

Lynch's second goal came five minutes later in the final minute of the half and had a similar look.  This time in the flow of play Lauren Guido (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood) sent a cross from near the right endline and Lynch struck again on the one-timer for a 2-1 lead at the break.

Alvernia maintained the one-goal lead for nearly 20 minutes in the second half until Etown collected a rebound and Liz DeMatteis sent a pass to Nadine Yunginger who scored her second of the season.

The Crusaders had a golden chance to take the lead with five minutes left, but a well-struck cross hopped passed the stick of Guido on the far post.

Etown took the long hit and pushed the ball downfield to earn the decisive corner.

Alvernia returns to action on Monday hosting King's College for a non-conference game on Monday.
