BOX SCORE (Game Two)
Jersey City, N.J. (Mar. 15, 2009) - Alvernia sophomores
Chris Stoudt (West Lawn, Pa./Governor Mifflin) and
Chuck Nicholas (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) both threw complete game shutouts as the Crusaders (12-5) swept a doubleheader at New Jersey City University (6-7-1) Sunday afternoon in non-conference baseball action.
Stoudt struck out eight and walked one in seven innings giving up just three hits, two of which came in the last inning as he worked with an 11-0 lead. The 6-3 lefty benefited from an offensive explosion as the Crusaders pounded out 17 hits and crossed the plate 11 times. Nicholas worked in a more precarious situation allowing five hits in a 1-0 win. Alvernia scored the only run of game two on a
Reid Martin (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) RBI groundout in the fifth.
In game one
Steve Bealer (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown),
Tim Ahlquist (Millville, N.J./Millville), and
Mike Latona (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) all went 3-for-4 at the plate. Alvernia scored three in the first and three more in the second before Ahlquist's two-run double posted an 8-0 score in the third. Latona scored one of three more runs in the sixth as the Crusaders started the inning with four straight singles.
Nicholas allowed two runners to start the top of the third on back-to-back singles, but a linedrive to Evan Domitrovits (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) at third turned into a double play and the Crusaders escaped the inning when Nicholas struck out the next batter.
Ahlquist opened the top half of the fourth with a double down the left field line. Stoudt, playing first base in game two, advanced him to third with a sac bunt, and Martin's grounder to short plated Ahlquist. Nicholas retired the side in order in the fourth and sixth innings and followed two-out singles in the fifth and seventh with strikeouts to keep the Gothic Knights off the board.
Alvernia is at Lebanon Valley College on Friday at 3:30 p.m. for a single game.
