Alvernia Tops LVC For The Third Time

Annville, Pa. (Mar. 20, 2009) - Alvernia University (13-5) plated runs in seven of nine innings on Fridaay afternoon in a 15-4 win at Lebanon Valley College (7-10) in non-conference baseball action.  The Crusaders got the first home run of the year from Tim Ahlquist (Millville, N.J./Millville) and Chris Simoncini (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs).

Alvernia scored three runs in the first inning that included a two-run single off the bat of designated hitter Reid Martin (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata).  Martin finished the day 3-for-4 with four runs and a pair of RBIs.

LVC put a single run on the board in the second inning, but Alvernia stretched its lead with two runs in the third.  The Dutchmen answered that output with two in the home half of the third, but Alvernia kept the trend going with two more runs in the top of the fourth.

Ahlquist, who finished 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs, doubled and scored in the sixth and hit a two-run homer in the seventh.

Alvernia continued to push forward with three runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth including Simoncini's first homer of the season.

Shane Zellers (Wiconisco, Pa./Williams Valley) allowed three runs on six hits with five strikeouts over five innings and improved to 3-2 on the season.  Four other pitchers appeared for Alvernia and all recorded at least one strikeout.

Freshman Mike Latona (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) collected three hits in four at-bats and had an RBI.

Alvernia will open the conference schedule next Tuesday at King's College.
