Reading, Pa. (Mar. 28, 2009) - Alvernia University (14-9, 1-3) gave up a pair of unearned runs in the opener and came a run shy of completing a comeback in game two as Manhattanville College (12-9, 2-2) swept a doubleheader in Freedom Conference baseball action Saturday afternoon at Angelica Park.
Shane Zellers (Wiconisco, Pa./Williams Valley) allowed four runs, just two earned, and struck out eight over six innings in the opener, but Manhattanville scored single runs in the fourth, sixth, and eighth innings to hold on for a 5-3 win.
Alvernia used six different pitchers in game two with
Chuck Nicholas (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) giving up five runs over six innings. The Crusaders took an 4-1 lead after two innings, but the Valiants came up with three runs each in the sixth and seventh innings for an 8-4 lead. Alvernia scored two in the seventh on a two-run double by
Steve Bealer (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) and two more in the eighth to tie the score at 8-8 on RBI singles by
Steve DeBarberie (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) and
Mike Latona (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson).
Manhattanville scratched out one more run in the top of the ninth and Alvernia got the tying run to second base with two out in the home half, but couldn't bring him in.
Bealer was 2-for-5 in the opener and
Eric Domitrovits (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) and
Adam Vrabel (Whitehall, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) also picked up two hits apiece. Bealer was 2-for-5 in game two and knocked in three. DeBarberie was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.
Alvernia will have a junior varsity game on Sunday before hosting Albright College on Tuesday.
