Alvernia Rallies Past Del Val In 10 Innings

Ahlquist Knocks In Game-Winner

BOX SCORE

Reading, Pa. (Apr. 2, 2009) - Sophomore second baseman Tim Ahlquist (Millville, N.J./Millville) knocked in the game-winner in the 10th inning Thursday afternoon as Alvernia University (15-10, 2-3) scored a run in the ninth and one in the 10th for a 5-4 comeback win over Delaware Valley (13-4, 1-4) in Freedom Conference baseball action at Angelica Park.

Alvernia sophomore Chris Stoudt (West Lawn, Pa./Governor Mifflin) cruised through seven innings allowing just one run on four hits while striking out nine.  He turned it over to the bullpen which, in conjunction with the defense, gave up three unearned runs in the eighth to give Delaware Valley a 4-3 lead.

In a scene similar to the ending of the 2008 ECAC South Championship which pitted these same two teams against one another, Alvernia plated a run in the ninth to tie the score.  Last year the winning run followed immediately, but this time around it took an extra innign of play.

Alvernia junior Steve Bealer (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) singled and stole second in the home half of the ninth and scored on a Reid Martin (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) single with two outs.  Last season Martin drove home the game-tying run on a sac fly.

Alvernia started the 10th with two straight sinlges, but Tyler Runkel (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) was thrown out trying to go first to third on Todd Speilman's (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) single.  Bealer followed with a fly ball to center for the second out and Ahlquist's single drove in Speilman with the game-winner.

Sophomore Ed Thompson (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) got his first win of the season throwing two innings of scoreless relief.  Speilman, Ahlquist, and Steve DeBarberie (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) all finished with two hits apiece and Bealer finished 4-for-6 with two runs and two RBIs.

Alvernia will travel to Delaware Valley on Friday for the home and away series.
