BOX SCORE
Reading, Pa. (Oct. 14, 2010) - Junior
Tonya Rutt (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) continued to push her personal scoring mark up with her seventh of the season and Brittany Barcus (Atglen, Pa./Octorara) notched her third of the season leading Alvernia University (7-7) to a 2-1 win over Wilkes University (4-6) Thursday evening in non-conference field hockey action at Schlager Memorial Field.
Wilkes goalie Lindsey Davenport, who finished with 14 saves, made some spectacular saves early on Crusader corner plays to keep the game deadlocked at 0-0 until the 29th minute when Rutt snapped a four-game scoreless streak with a shot through traffic.
The score remained 1-0 through halftime with Davenport making 10 of her 14 saves in the opening 35 minutes of play.
The field seemed to level in the second half with Wilkes starting to apply some pressure. The Colonels earned seven of their eight shots in the game after halftime and all 10 of their penalty corners, but it was Barcus who provided some insurance in the 54th minute for the Crusaders.

Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) possessed the ball in a scrum in front of the net and was able to get the ball free to Barcus in front of the left post and she drove it home for a 2-0 Alvernia lead.
Wilkes continued to keep up the pressure finally breaking through on a quick-passing corner play that finished with Gian Elmy blasting home a shot from the right side of the arc. The Colonels had a pair of chances at the equalizer, but freshman
Samantha Leck (Fleetwood, Pa./Oley Valley) stopped both including a sliding save on Marni Mancini with under two minutes to play.
Leck finished with four saves in just under 12 minutes of play while junior
Abby Eby (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) stopped a pair in 58 minutes.
Alvernia hits the road Saturday to return to the conference schedule and a 2:00 p.m. game at Shenandoah.
