BOX SCORE
Reading, Pa. (Oct. 26, 2010) - Sophomore forward
Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) netted her fifth goal of the season, an overtime game-winner as Alvernia (10-8, 4-3) defeated visiting Albright (8-9, 1-6) by a score of 2-1 this afternoon in Commonwealth Conference action. Albright held the 1-0 lead through most of the second half, but a late Alvernia goal forced overtime.
After a scoreless first half that saw the Crusaders outshoot the Lions 13-3, it was Albright who struck first less than three minutes into the second half.
Ashleigh Bradley found a pass from
Caitlin Feldman in front of the net and quickly shot it to the upper left of the net, well beyond the Alvernia goalkeeper to give the Lions the 1-0 lead.
The Crusaders continued to pound the Lion defense in the second half, again outshooting them, this time 23-4, but 12 second-half saves from Albright goalie
Marguerite DeLucas kept Alvernia off the board until the 67th minute. In the 67th minute,
Tonya Rutt (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) received the corner pass from
Lauren Guido (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood) and drilled it lower left of the cage for her team-leading 11th goal of the season to force overtime.
Alvernia did not waste much time in overtime, with Peto netting the game winner, assisted by Brittany Barcus (Atglen, Pa./Octorara) in the 73rd minute. Peto was in perfect position to redirect Barcus' shot just past the goals right pad.
With Alvernia's win over Alrbight this afternoon they have secured fourth place in the Commonwealth Conference standings and will travel to the #1 seed on Nov. 3rd.
