Alvernia Drops First Of The Season, 8-6 To Neumann

Ahlquist Scores A Pair For Crusaders

BOX SCORE

Vero Beach, Fl. (Mar. 2, 2010) - Alvernia University (4-1) dropped its first game of the season, an 8-6 loss to Neumann College (1-5) Tuesday morning in non-conference baseball action at Vero Beach.

The Crusaders fell behind 7-1 after the Knights put up a four-spot in the fourth, and tried to mount a comeback with two in the fourth and two in the fifth, but came up a bit short.  They had the potential tying run at second base with two out in the ninth, but Eric Klimoff finished the game striking out Brian Witkowski (Ewing, N.J./Notre Dame).

Freshman starter Brock Laubenstine (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Schuylkill Haven) gave up eight runs, five earned, in four innings before handing the ball to Andrew Sellers (Pequea, Pa./Penn Manor) who threw four scoreless innings.  Senior Brian Longo (Uncasville, Conn./Montville) threw a scoreless ninth for the Crusaders.

Laubenstine struck out six batters in the first three innings, but fell behind 3-0 giving up a leadoff home run in the first then hitting one and walking another in the third before two wild pitches setup the second and third runs.  An Alvernia error extended the fourth inning and opened the door for a four-run frame for the Knights, and Laubenstine left after surrendering a solo homer to start the fifth.

Alvernia junior Tim Ahlquist (Millville, N.J./Millville) doubled and scored in the third and doubled in one of two the Crusaders scored in the fourth.  Reid Martin (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) and Steve Bealer (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) ripped back-to-back triples to open the fifth and chase the Neumann starter, and Bealer scored on a sacrifice fly.

Ahlquist had his third double and second run of the day in the eighth to pull the Crusaders within two at 8-6, and Nole Saylor (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) walked with two out in the ninth.  Steve DeBarberie (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) followed with a double to move the potential tying run into scoring position, but Kimoff ended it with the strikeout.

Alvernia will take a day off before playing Thiel College once each on Thursday and Friday and closing the Spring Break trip with a doubleheader against Muhlenberg on Saturday.
