Shane Zellers (Wiconisco, Pa./Williams Valley) won his fifth straight start for Alvernia University (12-5, 2-3) in game one, and Widener University (7-6, 3-2) scored five runs in the last two innings of game to for a 6-2 win Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference baseball action at Angelica Park.
Zellers allowed just three hits and matched his career high with 13 strikeouts. He struck out two batters in four of the first five innings, then with the potential tying run on base to start the seventh, he struck out the side to close the game.
Alvernia scored the only run of the game in the fourth when
Steve Bealer (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) led off the inning with a single, took second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on an RBI single off the bat of
Eric Domitrovits (Northampton, Pa./Northampton).
Widener had a man in scoring position with one out in the fourth, but other than that did not threaten.
Alvernia opened the scoring in game two on an RBI single by
Chazz Losito (Avondale, Pa./Avon Grove) in the second inning that brought home Chuck Krichlilng (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington) who led off the inning with a double.
Widener tied the score with a run in the fifth on a hit and an error then cut down a go-ahead run at the plate in the bottom of the fifth.
The first three batters reached in the sixth for the Pride and all three came around to score for a 4-1 lead and Widener padded the lead with two more in the seventh.
Alvernia threatened in the home half of the seventh when Losito and
Tim Ahlquist (Millville, N.J./Millville) singled and doubled to start the inning.
Brendan O'Brien (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) drew a walk to bring the tying run to the plate, but Widener starter Jason Ferrie got out of it with a strikeout and a double play.
Chuck Nicholas (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) surrendered all six runs on nine hits in game two to take the loss.
Alvernia will travel to Widener on Sunday to complete the three-game series.
