Alvernia Earns Series Win With 13-6 Victory At Widener

Five Crusaders Have Multi-Hit Games

BOX SCORE

Chester, Pa. (Mar. 28, 2010) - Alvernia University (13-5, 3-3) pounded out 17 hits and benefited from seven walks in a 13-6 win over Widener University (7-7, 3-3) Sunday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference baseball action at Widener.

Both starters struggled with control and walked six batters each.  Alvernia capitalized bringing four of those runners in to score while Crusader sophomore Andrew Kirk (Media, Pa./Penncrest) stranded all but one of the free passes he offered.

The Crusaders got multi-hit games from five different players led by Chazz Losito (Avondale, Pa./Avon Grove) who finished the game 4-for-6.  Chris Ray (Exton, Pa./West Chester Henderson) batted leadoff and went 3-for-5 with three runs scored.  Steve Bealer (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) started the game in left field and went 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs.  Chuck Krichling (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington) was 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs.  Bealer and Krichling both walked twice and scored both times.

Kirk allowed two runs on seven hits through six innings and walk six and stuck out six.  He improved to 3-1 on the season with the win.

Alvernia scored the leadoff hitter in each of the first three innings.  Ray scored on a Krichling single in the first, Eric Domitrovits (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) walked and scored in the second, and drove in Bealer in the third.

Widener cut into the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third, but after a scoreless fourth inning, Alvernia scored three runs in three straight innings for a 12-2 lead through seven innings.

Widener mounted a bit of a comeback with four runs in the eighth, but the Alvernia lead was insurmountable.

The Crusaders head right back out on Monday with a non-conference game at The College on New Jersey.
