Nole Saylor (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown), and
Brian Witkowski (Ewing, N.J./Notre Dame) knocked in three runs apiece and Alvernia University (6-1) earned its second straight lopsided win over Thiel College (3-4) with a 17-5 decision Friday afternoon in non-conference baseball action.
Alvernia jumped out with three runs in the first, five in the second, and took a 10-0 lead after three in support of junior starter
Chuck Nicholas (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) who picked up his second win of the season going seven innings and giving up five runs.
Saylor knocked in single runs with triples in both the first and third innings and plated one in the second with a sacrifice fly. Martin chased home two runs in the fourth and walked with the bases loaded in the seventh. Witkowski brought home a run in the second with a bunt single and drove in two more with a triple in the sixth. It was one of five triples for the Crusaders in the game.
Martin was the hit leader for Alvernia with four. The Crusaders finished with 17 hits bringing their two-day total to 39 against Thiel. Sophomore
Chuck Krichling (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington) scored a team-best three runs and finished 2-for-2 at the plate.
Alvernia will wrap up its spring break trip with a doubleheader against Muhlenberg Saturday starting at noon.
