Reading, Pa. (April 10, 2010) - Senior pitcher Shane Zellers (Wiconisco, Pa./Williams Valley) threw six strong innings to improve to 7-0 as Alvernia University (21-6, 8-4) split a doubleheader with Messiah College (10-13, 3-6) by scores of 3-1 and 10-7 Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference baseball action at Angelica Park.

Zellers allowed one earned run and struck out six over six innings in the opener.  Senior Chuck Krichling (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington) singled home a run in the first inning and Eric Domitrovits (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) had a two-run single in the sixth in support of Zellers.

Messiah scored its lone run on a double in the sixth, and put the tying run on base in the seventh before Austin Rohrbach (Maxatawny, Pa./Kutztown) nailed down his fifth save of the season.

Alvernia took a 4-2 lead with a four-run third inning in game two highlighted by a bases-clearing triple from Nole Saylor (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown), and pushed it to 6-3 with two runs in the fifth.

Starting pitcher Chuck Nicholas (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) got two out in the sixth with two on, but the Crusaders struggled to close the inning and the Falcons scored six times with two outs on six hits in the inning.

Alvernia got one back in the bottom of the sixth, but the Falcons plated an unearned run in the top of the seventh for the 10-7 final.

Alvernia will face back-to-back NJAC opponents this Tuesday and Wednesday traveling to Rutgers-Newark and The College of New Jersey.
