BOX SCORE
Ewing, N.J. (April 14, 2010) - Junior
Nole Saylor (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) scored three runs and senior
Brian Longo (Uncasville, Conn./Montville) earned the victory in relief as Alvernia University (21-7) topped The College of New Jersey (12-13), 7-2 Wednesday afternoon in non-conference baseball action at Ackerman Park.
Freshman
Chris Ray (Exton, Pa./West Chester Henderson) led off the game with a home run and Saylor was hit by a pitch and scored to give Alvernia a 2-0 lead early. The first two batters in the Lions' lineup scored in the home half of the first inning to tie the game at 2-2.
Saylor doubled and scored in the top of the fifth to provide the game-winning run, but that wasn't sure until the Crusaders' bullpen got some work done from the fifth inning on.
Longo entered in the bottom of the fifth with two on and one out and got back-to-back flyouts from the three and four hitters in the Lions' lineup to end the threat. Longo went three and a third innings and struck out four giving up just one hit.
Reid Martin (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) scored an unearned run in the eighth and
Jeff Smith (Sinking Spring, Pa./Holy Name) provided a pinch-hit, two-run single as part of a three-run ninth.
Saylor,
Eric Domitrovits (Northampton, Pa./Northampton),
Steve Bealer (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown), and
Brian Witkowski (Ewing, N.J./Notre Dame) all finished with two-hit games.
Austin Rohrbach (Maxatawny, Pa./Kutztown) entered with one out in the eighth and threw a scoreless ninth to nail down his sixth save.
Alvernia returns to the conference schedule hosting Arcadia for a single game on Friday.
