Orban Goes Seven Strong For The Win

BOX SCORE

Reading, Pa. (April 20, 2010) - The game of baseball more than any other allows opportunities to see something you've never seen before.

Monday afternoon in a non-conference game at Angelica Park, Alvernia junior Reid Martin (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) picked a good time for his first home run of the season completing a cycle in his final at-bat of the day as the Crusaders (25-7) pounded Penn State-Berks (21-14), 18-2.

The Lions committed five errors in the second inning allowing Alvernia to score eight runs and the Crusaders never looked back.  In another thing you don't see every day, the Lions sent out eight different arms to hurl an inning each.

Martin finished the day 4-for-5 with seven RBIs.  Senior catcher Steve Bealer (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown), the Commonwealth Player of the Week, went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBIs.  Chuck Krichling (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington) was one of four players to score three runs, and did so without a base hit.

Berks opened the game with the first run of the game in the first, but Alvernia answered with 11 runs in the first three innings.  Bealer had a two-run triple in the first and Martin's two-run double highlighted the eight-run second.  Chris Ray (Exton, Pa./West Chester Henderson) doubled and scored in the third and the Crusaders took an 11-1 lead.

Alvernia scored four runs in the fifth, all with two out, highlighted by Martin's bases-clearing triple and his two-run homer in the seventh put Alvernia up 18-1.

Mike Orban (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) allowed just one run over seven innings and struck out five.  He improved to 2-1 on the season.

Alvernia will continue the non-conference, mid-week games hosting Centenary on Wednesday.
