Offense On Full Display As Crusaders Sweep Stevenson

Reading, Pa. (May 1, 2010) - Alvernia University (32-8) won with offense and pitching Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of Stevenson University (18-23) in non-conference baseball action at Angelica Park.

Senior Shane Zellers (Wiconisco, Pa./Williams Valley) gave up two runs in five innings in the opener and got plenty of support in a 16-2 victory and Chuck Nicholas (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) threw six innings of a 13-0 shutout in game two.

Alvernia will enter the Commonwealth Conference playoffs this Thursday at Owl's Field in West Lawn, Pa., as the #2 seed behind top-seeded Widener.  The Crusaders play #3 Elizabethtown in the 7:30 p.m. game following Widener and #4 Messiah in the opener at 4:00 p.m.

In game one Saturday, the Crusaders scored 12 runs in the first three innings.  Reid Martin (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) and Chris Ray (Exton, Pa./West Chester Henderson) both had three hits.  Ray drove in three while Martin homered and drove in three.  Zellers have up three hits, struckout six, and walked a pair.

In the nightcap, Steve Bealer (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) hit a grand slam as part of an eight-run fourth.  He finished 3-for-3 with five RBIs.  Ray went 3-for-4 in the second straight game and Tim Ahlquist (Millville, N.J./Millville) also went 3-for-4.  Nicholas gave up five hits, walked two, and fanned eight.

Albright College will serve as host of the Commonwealth Championships which run this Thursday through Saturday.
