Reading, Pa. (Sept. 1, 2010) - Junior forward
Katy Eby (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) scored the first and last goal of the game to lead Alvernia University to a 3-1 win over York College Wednesday evening in non-conference field hockey action at Schlager Memorial Field.
Alvernia looked to take a 1-0 lead in the first half on a goal by sophomore
Lauren Guido (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood), but it was disallowed after the initial shot from the top of the circle caromed off the body of an Alvernia player.
After a scoreless first half, Eby scored the opener when she essentially posted up the Spartans' keeper and scored on the backhand with an assist to freshman
Kyle Dillman (Hershey, Pa./Lower Dauphin) in the 40th minute. Junior
Sam Landis (Watsontown, Pa./Warrior Run) doubled the Crusaders' lead with a rocket from just inside the circle with another assist to Dillman.
York wasted little time in cutting into the deficit. The Spartans marched the restart right down the field in 12 seconds and cut the lead to 2-1 on a goal from Allison Roush, but Eby answered four minutes later with her second for some breathing room and the Crusaders closed out the 3-1 win.
Junior goalie
Abby Eby (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) made five saves for the Crusaders and
Tonya Rutt (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) recorded a defensive save in the game's opening minutes.
Alvernia returns to action Saturday at Franklin & Marshall.
