Crusaders Post Comeback Win Over Widener

BOX SCORE Reading, Pa. (Oct. 25, 2011) - Lauren Guido (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood) scored the game-winner with less than five minutes remaining in regulation as Alvernia (11-6, 4-2 Comm.) defeated visiting Widener University (7-8, 2-4 Comm.) by a score of 2-1 this afternoon in Commonwealth Conference action.

It was the Pride from Widener who struck first as Nicole Kardone dropped in a successful penalty stroke in the 26th minute.  Alvernia tallied six shots and two corners in the first half to the Pride's four shots and one corner.

The second half brought more excitement as the Crusaders fired off 15 shots and earned five penalty corners.  Senior Sam Landis (Watsontown, Pa./Warrior Run) tied the game at one with a goal in the 41st minute thanks to a pass through the circle from Katy Eby (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) that she tapped in for her tenth goal of the season.

The game appeared headed for overtime until Guido put in the game winner after dribbling through some Pride defense and beating the goalie lower-right.  Widener had a chance to even the score as they were awarded a penalty stroke with 38 seconds remaining, but they were unsuccessful and Alvernia held on for the 2-1 victory.

The Crusaders return to action on Oct. 27th when they travel to Cabrini College for a non-conference game at 6:00pm.
