Reading, Pa. (Oct. 8, 2011) - Senior
Sam Landis (Watsontown, Pa./Warrior Run) set up junior
Lauren Guido (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood) for two nearly identical goals and Alvernia University (8-3, 2-0) earned a 2-0 win over Elizabethtown College (7-3, 2-1) Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference Field Hockey action at Schlager Memorial Field.
Its the second time in as many games this week the Crusaders have scored twice in the second half for a 2-0 win.
Both teams were fairly even through the first half and the Alvernia offense stepped it up a notch in the second half. The Crusaders earned 15 of their 20 corners after halftime and had 10 of their 14 shots in the second. The scoring plays were essentially Landis ending up with a loose ball in front of the Etown cage and pushing it to Guido near the right post. Guido finished the first goal under a diving effort from Etown goalie Lindy Hamp in the 39th minute and scored the insurance goal with under four minutes to go.
The two teams combined for 33 corners and 25 shots. Hamp made two saves and backup Marlena Johnson stopped six shots.
Erin Wunsch (West Lawn, Pa./Wilson) made six saves in net for the Crusaders.
Alvernia finds itself one of just two undefeated teams in the conference tied with Messiah College at the top.
The Crusaders host Juniata College on Tuesday for a non-conference game then head to Annville for an important conference tilt with Lebanon Valley.
