Reading, Pa. (Mar. 19, 2011) - Alvernia University (12-1, 3-0) got solid efforts from both starters in a doubleheader sweep of Arcadia University (0-11, 0-3) Saturday afternoon in Commonweatlh Conference baseball action at Angelica Park.
Sophomore
Andrew Kirk (Media, Pa./Penncrest) went the distance in the opener giving up one run on three hits with eight strikeouts in an 8-1 Alvernia victory. Freshman
Mike Weinhold (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weiser) went three innings without giving up a hit in a 9-6 win.
Kirk struck out the first four batters he faced in the opener and got all the offense he needed when
Reid Martin (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) snuck a two-run single up the middle with two out in the first.
Travis Wrambel (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) added a two-run double as part of a three-run third. Martin finished the game 3-for-3 and three other players collected two hits apiece.
In game two the Crusaders scored at least one run in every inning. Wrambel and
Tim Ahlquist (Millville, N.J./Millville) both homered, and the Crusaders held a 9-3 lead in the seventh before the Knights closed with three in the final frame. Sophomore
Brian Witkowski (Ewing, N.J./Notre Dame) earned the win in relief giving up two runs in three innings of work.
Alvernia travels to Rowan University for a non-conference game on Wednesday.
