#25 TCNJ Stops Crusaders' Streak At 15

Lions Hit Back-To-Back Homers In The Sixth

BOX SCORE

Reading, Pa. (Mar. 28, 2011) - The College of New Jersey (13-2) stopped a team record 15-game win streak for Alvernia University (15-2) Monday afternoon with a 6-1 win in non-conference baseball action at Angelica Park.

Alvernia senior Mike Moran (Lafayette, N.Y./Fabius-Pompey) pitched out of first-inning trouble and kept the Lions off the board until they hit back-to-back, two-out homers in the sixth.  The Lions tacked on a run in the seventh before Alvernia put a run up in the bottom of the seventh, but TCNJ posted three more in the eighth on a bases-clearing double.

Alvernia outhit TCNJ 9-5, but couldn't find the clutch hit.  Leon Stimpson (Philadelphia, Pa./Malvern Prep) and Reid Martin (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) both had two hits, and Brian Witkowski (Ewing, N.J./Notre Dame) produced the Crusaders' lone run knocking in Stimpson on a two-out single in the seventh.

Moran gave up back-to-back singles with one out in the top of the first, and after a great leaping grab by first baseman Eric Domitrovits (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) on a line drive, walked the next man to load the bases.  Moran got out of the jam striking out Jon Gabriel to end the first.

He only allowed one baserunner--a hit batsman in the third--before TCNJ's homers in the sixth ended his afternoon.

Alvernia had a runner in scoring position with one out in the second, but TCNJ ace Connor Henderson recorded two strikeouts around a walk to end the threat.

Stimpson was thrown out trying to steal second to end the third and Chris Gehris (Sinking Spring, Pa./Holy Name) reached third with two out in the fourth, but was stranded by another strikeout.

The Crusaders had a golden opportunity to respond to TCNJ's score in the bottom of the sixth.  Chris Ray (Exton, Pa./Henderson) singled with one out, Gehris was hit in the back, and Martin walked to load the bases.  Henderson answered the call again with a strikeout then a grounder to first to end the inning.

Alvernia finally broke through in the home half of the seventh.  Stimpson singled with two out, stole second, and scored when Witkowski ripped the ball back through the box.  Witkowski took second on a wild pitch, but was stranded there when Ray flew out to center.

Alvernia continues its tour of the New Jersey Atheltic Conference Wednesday when it travles to Kean University.
