Alvernia Wins 5-4 Again In Last At-Bat

Collins Wins In Relief, Hausdorf Earns First Save

BOX SCORE

Elizabethtown, Pa. (Apr. 10, 2011) - Alvernia University (21-3, 9-0) earned its third straight 5-4 win over Elizabethtown College (11-13, 4-5) and its fourth straight win in its last at-bat with a 14th inning decision Sunday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference baseball action at Elizabethtown.

The Crusaders remained unbeaten in conference play running off their third straight three-game sweep.  Following a pair of 5-4 walk-off wins on Saturday the Crusaders went five extra innings Sunday once again benefiting from a free pass.  Senior Reid Martin (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) drew a two-out walk in the top of the 14th and Travis Wrambel (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) doubled him home for a 5-4 lead.  Jeremy Hausdorf (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Mary's) threw a scoreless frame in the bottom of the 14th to earn his first save and give the win to Rich Collins (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) to gave up one hit working the 12th and 13th.

Alvernia plated the first two runs of the game in the second inning getting RBI singles from Tim Ahlquist (Millville, N.J./Millville) and Leon Stimpson (Philadelphia, Pa./Malvern Prep).  Etown cut that lead in half with a single run in the third of Alvernia starter Chuck Nicholas (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown), but Alvernia got it right back when Wrambel scored on a Matt O'Neill (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) single in the fourth.

Etown took advantage of two Alvernia errors in the fifth inning to plate three unearned runs and take a 4-3 lead, and Jays' starter Wayne Leonard was one out away from going the distance when he walked Chris Ray (Exton, Pa./Henderson) with two out in the seventh and gave up a game-tying, RBI double to Chris Gehris (Sinking Spring, Pa./Holy Name).

Alvernia nearly forged ahead in the eighth, but Wrambel was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.  The Jays went in order in the seventh, eighth, and ninth, and put the winning run at second against Alvernia closer Austin Rohrbach (Maxatawny, Pa./Kutztown), but he got a fly ball to center to end the threat.

The Crusaders, who had runners on in each extra inning but the ninth, had the go-ahead run at second base twice, but couldn't deliver until Wramble's double in the 14th.  Collins got an around-the-horn double play to end the 13th inning and Hausdorf gave up a two-out single in the 14th, but got a groundball to second to end the game.

Alvernia hosts a pair of non-conference games Tuesday and Wednesday before a big three-game series with defending conference champion Widener starts in Reading next Friday.
