BOX SCORE
Reading, Pa. (Apr. 14, 2011) -
Travis Wrambel (Newtown Squre, Pa./Marple Newtown) and
Julian Faria (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) both homered and drove in a combined 12 runs to lead Alvernia University (22-3) to a 14-10 win over Misericordia University (15-6) Thursday afternoon in non-conference baseball action at Angelica Park.
Wramble, who finished with seven RBIs, hit a two-run home run as part of a three-run third and drove in runs in four of his five at-bats. He was hit by a pitch in his only at-bat without an RBI to lead off the sixth, but stole second and scored on a Faria single.
Faria drove in five runs on the day, four of them on one swing of the bat when he launched a grand slam as part of a six-run fifth that gave Alvernia the lead for good.
Mike Moran (Lafayette, N.Y./Fabius-Pompey) struggled with control walking four and hitting another. He gave up eight runs--five earned--on 10 hits over six innings, but earned the win thanks in part to a big day from the offense which scored 14 runs on 16 base hits.
The Cougars took a 4-2 lead with three runs in the top of the third, but Alvernia came right back with three in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead, 5-4.
Misericordia posted four more in the fourth for an 8-5 lead and this time the Alvernia responce wasn't immediat, but it was complete as the Crusaders posted six runs on eight hits in the fifth.
Eight of the nine starters for Alvernia had at least one hit led by Wramble who finished 4-for-4 with three runs scored and seven RBIs.
Chris Ray (Exton, Pa./Henderson) was 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored.
Alvernia returns to conference play this weekend kicking off a three-game series with Widener University on Friday.
Friday's are Armed Forces Day for the Crusaders who pay tribute to those who serve or have served. Alvernia professor Ed Hartung is scheduled to throw out the ceremonial first pitch Friday at 3:30 p.m.
