Grantham, Pa. (Apr. 25, 2011) - Alvernia University (27-5, 14-1) had plenty of offense in game one then one bad inning in game two and split a doubleheader at Messiah College (20-17, 13-5) by final scores of 15-3 and 8-4 Monday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference baseball action.

With the win in the opener the Crusaders locked up the top seed in the Commonwealth playoffs which begin next Wednesday at Owl's Field in West Lawn.  Messiah is locked into the two spot in the playoffs.  The other teams will be two from the group of Elizabethtown, Lebanon Valley, and Widener.

Alvernia got Monday started with three runs in the first inning in support of freshman Mike Weinhold (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weiser) and never trailed.  Reid Martin (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) delivered an RBI double and Eric Domitrovits (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) followed with a two-run single.

Alvernia added on with four runs in the fourth and blew it open with six runs in the fifth.

Weinhold went the distance giving up three runs on two hits with four walks and eight strikeouts.  Leon Stimpson (Philadelphia, Pa./Malvern Prep) and Tim Ahlquist (Millville, N.J./Millville) led the offensive attack both going 4-for-5 at the plate.

Alvernia opened game two with a pair of runs in the first inning.  Chris Ray (Exton, Pa./Henderson) and Travis Wrambel (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) both delivered run-scoring hits.

This time the big inning belonged to the Falcons who plated seven runs in the fourth on six hits and one walk.  Mike Moran (Lafayette, N.Y./Fabius-Pompey) suffered the loss giving up five runs on seven hits over three and a third innings.

Brian Witkowski (Ewing, N.J./Notre Dame), Martin, and Ahlquist all had two-hit games in game two for the Crusaders.

Alvernia will play Stevenson on Wednesday before it finishes up the conference schedule next Friday and Saturday with three games against Albright.
