Reid Martin (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning of game one and
Eric Domitrovits (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) drew the walk-off walk to end game two as Alvernia University (20-3, 8-0) took a pair of 5-4, comeback wins over Elizabethtown College (11-12, 4-4) Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference baseball action at Angelica Park.
The Crusaders fell behind 4-1 early in game one, but tied the score when
Leon Stimpson (Philadelphia, Pa./Malvern Prep) hit a solo homer in the fifth, and
Tim Ahlquist (Millville, N.J./Millville) tripled in a run then scored in the sixth.
Stimpson opened the seventh with a walk which preceded free passes to both
Brian Witkowski (Ewing, N.J./Notre Dame) and
Chris Ray (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) to load the bases with nobody out.
Chris Gehris (Sinking Spring, Pa./Holy Name) hit a ground ball to second and the Jays extended the game getting Stimpson at the plate, but Martin lifted a fly ball to center deep enough to score Witkowski.
In game two the Crusaders were down 4-2 through four innings and entered the bottom of the seventh trailing by a run after scoring an uneared run in the fifth. This time Stimpson was hit by a pitch to open the seventh. He went to third on a Witkowski single and the two worked the double steal with Stimpson sliding in for the tying run as Witkowski swiped second.
Ray walked again to put two runners on and Gehris hit another fielder's choice that forced Witkowski at third. Martin was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Domitrovits got into the act drawing the walk to end the game.
Andrew Kirk (Media, Pa./Penncrest) reached double figures in strikeouts for the second time this season setting down 10, but he did walk four and gave up four runs on four hits. He went the distance in the seven inning game to improve to 5-0.
Mike Weinhold (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weiser) took the ball in game two, but only last three innings giving up four runs on three hits and three walks. He did strike out five including the first three batters of the game.
Cody Smith (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) took over in the fourth and finished the game to earn the win and improve to 2-0. He gave up three hits and a walk and struck out three.
Alvernia and Etown are scheduled to complete the three-game series with a single game at Etown Sunday afternoon.
