Reading, Pa. (Sept. 10, 2011) - Junior Brittany Barcus (Atglen, Pa./Octorara) and wenior attack
Sam Landis (Watsontown, Pa./Warrior Run) scored a pair of goals each and
Erin Wunsch (West Lawn, Pa./Wilson) made four saves to record her second straight win as Alvernia University (2-0) defeated Gwynedd-Mercy College (2-2) 4-2 Saturday afternoon in non-conference field hockey action at Schlager Memorial Field.
Barcus opened the scoring in the third minute finishing off a set-up from Landis. Two minutes later Landis powered home one of her patented rockets from the top of the circle on a corner feed from senior Erin Soley (Reading, Pa./Oley Valley) to put the host Crusader up 2-0. Later in the first the Crusaders had a goal disallowed when it was ruled that
Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) played a ball with a high stick before it cross the goal line. The Griffins got on the board in the 31st minute on just their second shot of the half when Christine Hammitt slipper her first of the year under the pads of Wunsch in the 31st minute. She was assisted by Brooke Stretch.
The Crusaders led 2-1 at the break, but doubled their total with Landis and Barcus both scoring their second of the game early in the second half. The Griffins closed the scoring with a goal in the game's final minute.
Alvernia will host a pair of non-conference games this week with Misericordia coming to town on Tuesday for a 7:00 game and Franklin & Marshall coming Thursday for a rescheduled game at 4:30 p.m.
