Landis Scores A Pair As Crusaders Top Wilkes

Wilkes-Barre, Pa. (Sept. 26, 2011) - Senior Sam Landis (Watsontown, Pa./Warrior Run) scored a pair of goals to lead Alvernia University (6-2) to a 3-1 win over Wilkes University (1-5) Monday evening in non-conference field hockey action at Wilkes.

After a scoreless first half that had an astounding 16 shots from the Crusaders and an impressive 13 saves from Wilkes goalie Lindsey Davenport, the Colonels opened the scoring on their second shot of the night in the 38th minute.

Alvernia, which overcame a 1-0 deficit on Saturday in a 3-1 win at Arcadia, got its first goal exactly two minutes later to tie the game at 1-1.  Junior Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) set up Katy Eby (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) to force the tie then Landis scored in the 47th and 59th minutes for the 3-1 final.

Erin Wunsch (West Lawn, Pa./Wilson), the conference defender of the week, made three saves to earn the win.  Davenport finished with 21 saves for the Colonels.

With the win, the Crusaders are off to their best start since 2007 when they ran off a streak of eight straight wins to start the season 9-2.  Alvernia will continue the non-conference schedule hosting Delaware Valley on Wednesday.
