Reading, Pa. (Oct. 20, 2012) - On Saturday afternoon, the Alvernia University (8-9, 2-5) Field Hockey team was defeated by a score of 2-0 at the hands of Stevenson University (7-11, 3-4) in Commonwealth Conference action at Schlager Memorial Field. Although the Crusaders outshot the Mustangs 19-12, in part thanks to their 15 corners, they were unable to capitalize on several scoring opportunities.
Perhaps Alvernia's best scoring chance was late in the first half as senior
Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville Area) found her way through the Mustang defense on a fast break. She cut around the goal keeper and earned a penalty stroke, but
Lauren Guido (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood) sent her attempt just wide of the cage.
Stevenson took the 1-0 lead with twenty five minutes remaining in the second half, as
Kaitlyn May found the back of the cage off a rebound to break the scoreless tie. Later in the half,
Alyssa Russell scored her first of the year off a corner to put the Mustang's up by two.
Crusaders goalkeeper
Erin Wunsch (West Lawn Pa/ Wilson) finished with eight saves.
With the loss to Stevenson, the best the Crusaders could finish in conference is 3-5, putting them just out of the conference playoffs. Even with a three-way (Stevenson, Widener) or four-way (Stevenson, Widener, Albright) tie, Alvernia will not finish in fifth place.
Alvernia returns to action on Wednesday when the take on Hood College in their final Commonwealth Conference game of the season.
