BOX SCORE
Chester, Pa. (Oct. 6, 2012) – Alvernia University (7-6, 2-2) got goals from three different players and sophomore
Erin Wunsch (West Lawn, Pa./Wilson) made nine saves to lead the Crusaders to a 3-0 win over Widener University (2-9, 0-3) Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference field hockey action at Widener.
Wunsch made all nine of her saves in the first half while the game was still in question. Senior
Brittney Barcus (Atglen, Pa./Octorara) scored her second goal of the season assisted by
Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenxville) in the 19th minute. It was the only goal of the half and put the Crusaders up 1-0 at the break. Widener hit the post in the 17th minute and Wunsch got help from a defender in the 21st minute to keep the Pride off the board.
Freshman
Melanie Lowry (Gap, Pa./Octorara) gave the Crusaders some breathing room with her second of the season just under three minutes into the second half. That goal came unassisted off a corner play. Widener had just one shot in the next 15 minutes, but that sailed wide. With 11 minutes left in regulation the Pride's Katie Ferguson got a shot past Wunsch, but senior
Erin Solley (Reading, Pa./Oley Valley) was there for a defensive save to preserve the shutout.
Peto closed the scoring in the 62nd minute with her seventh goal of the season avoiding a dive from the Widener keeper and tipping the ball into the goal.
The Crusaders are on the road again next Wednesday when they travel to Elizabethtown College for an important Commonwealth Conference match up.
