Rutgers-Newark Takes Midweek Pitchers' Duel 4-2

Crusaders Held To Just Three Hits

BOX SCORE

Newark, N.J. (Apr. 17, 2012) - A Rutgers-Newark (15-15) pitching committee held Alvernia University (21-9-1)--an offense averaging better than 10 hits a game--to just three singles Tuesday evening on its way to a 4-2 win in non-conference baseball action at Riverfront Stadium.

The Scarlet Raiders scored a single run in the third, two more in the sixth, and another in the seventh, while there Crusaders managed a pair in the eighth.  Alvernia put the potential tying run on base in the ninth, but the Newark closer got a strikeout and flyout to end the game.

Alvernia starter Mike Weinhold (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weiser) went five and a third innings and gave up three runs on six hits.  He struck out nine, but walked seven.  Anthony Gambino (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) went an inning and two-thirds and was charged with a run, and Kevin Becker-Menditto (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) threw a scoreless ninth.

Newark scored the first run on the game on three hits and an error in the third.  Weinhold limited the damage striking out Steve Tamayo with the bases loaded to end the inning.  The Scarlet Raiders scored twice in the sixth with just two hits--one a bases loaded single--and a sacrifice fly.

Trailing 4-0 in the eighth, the Crusaders drew three straight one-out walks.  Kevin Bailey (Fallston, Md./Fallston) drove in the first run with a groundout to second and Aaron Carmen (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weiser) brought in the second with a single up the middle before Newark ended the inning with another groundout.

Nole Saylor (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) and Brian Witkowski (Ewing, N.J./Notre Dame) walked and singled with one out in the ninth, but the Crusaders couldn't chase them home.

Alvernia turns right around and hosts Muhlenberg College on Wednesday.
