Reading, Pa. (Apr. 25, 2012) - Junior Matt Burger (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) made his second start of the season and went seven innings giving up just one run on two hits to lead Alvernia University (25-10-1) to a 4-1 win over Stevenson University (20-19-2) Wednesday afternoon in non-conference baseball action at Angelica Park.
Burger held the Mustangs hitless through the first four innings and had a 1-0 lead entering the fifth thanks to an RBI-groundout from
Rory Clemens (Harleysville, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) in the third.
Burger stranded the runner in the fifth then got three more runs from the offense in the bottom of the fifth.
Matt O'Neill (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) doubled and scored, and
Nole Saylor (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) hit a two-run homer to left--his third of the season.
The Mustangs went in order in the sixth and seventh then Burger got into a bit of trouble in the eighth. After a walk and a hit batter, he gave up an infield single that loaded the bases with no one out. Closer
Kevin Becker-Menditto (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) got a strikeout, then gave up a run on a groundout, and ended the inning with another groundout.
Becker-Menditto threw the ninth to close out the game and pick up his fifth save of the season.
Aaron Carman (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weiser) went 3-for-4 for the second straight day.
Alvernia returns to conference action for its final three-game series of the year against Widener this Fridya and Saturday.
