Reading, Pa. (Apr. 9, 2012) - Alvernia University (19-7-1, 8-1) got a pair of solid efforts on the mound from sophomore
Aaron Benusis (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) and freshman
Steve Price (Barto, Pa./Boyertown) to complete a three-game sweep of Albright College (10-17, 3-6) Monday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference baseball action at Albright.
Benusis went five innings in the opener and gave up four runs--all in the fifth--with three walks and five strikeouts. The offense plated five runs in the top of the fifth for an 8-0 lead. Albright cut it in half in the bottom of the inning, but Alvernia tacked on another run in the sixth and a pair of relievers worked a scoreless frame each to close out the 9-4 win.
Price got into some trouble in the first inning of game two, but worked out of it and went six innings allowing two runs on five hits in a 14-2 win. Alvernia scored twice in the top of the first and Price gave up a triple and a single to open the bottom of the inning. He followed with a hit batter and another single to load the bases with no one out, but got a force at home on a grounder and ended the threat with a double play ball to second.
Matt Patterson (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham) and
Kevin Bailey (Fallston, Md./Fallston) had three hits apiece in the opener with two RBIs each, and
Cody Younker (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) drove in three.
AJ Bennett (Jackson, N.J./St. John Vianney) was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Bailey stayed hot in game two going 4-for-4 with three RBIs. He finished the day 7-for-8 at the plate.
Rory Clemens (Harleysville, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) and
Chris Ray (Exton, Pa./West Chester Henderson) had three hits each in support of Price.
The Crusaders travel to Muhlenberg College for a non-conference game on Wednesday then head to Lebanon Valley College on Friday to start a three-game, weekend series with the Dutchmen.
