Peto's Pair Brings Alvernia A Win

Senior Nets Both Goals In 2-1 Victory

BOX SCORE

Reading, Pa. (Sept. 24, 2012) - On Monday evening the Alvernia University field hockey team (4-5) defeated Wilkes University (3-5) by a score of 2-1. Senior forward Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa. / Phoenixville Area) had both Crusader goals.

With 10 minutes remaining in the first half the Crusaders had a fast break where Peto fired a rebound into the back of the cage. The officials ultimately nullified the goal because it bounced off the foot of a Crusader.

With the game still scoreless Peto connected on a pass from fellow senior Brittany Barcus (Atglen, Pa. /Octorara) to give Alvernia a 1-0 lead heading into the half.

Fifteen minutes into the second half Laruen Guido (Fleetwood, Pa. / Fleetwood) and Peto charged down the field on a fast break against three Wilkes defenders. Peto cut into the circle while Guido dropped back and then hit Peto with a crisp pass that Peto fired into the cage through the goalie's pads.

With the score 2-0 in favor of the Crusaders, Wilkes called a timeout. Coming out of the time out, the Colonels made a notable adjustment by pushing all their players up into Crusader territory. The move paid off as the Colonels earned their 17th corner of the game and Emily Saliba was able to score Wilkes' first goal and cut the deficit in half.

The Wilkes surge proved to be too little, too late as Alvernia hung on and recorded the win.

Sophomore goal keeper Erin Wunsch (West Lawn, Pa./ Wilson High School) had a solid night in net for the Crusaders and recorded 10 saves.

With the win the Crusaders move to 4-5 on the season. They return to action on Saturday when they travel across town to take on rival Albright College.
