Crusaders Hold Off York For 3-2 Win

BOX SCORE
Reading, Pa. (Oct. 1, 2013) - Alvernia (6-3) netted two first-half goals and held on for the 3-2 win over visiting York College (3-6) Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action on Alvernia's turf field.  There was plenty of action on both ends of the field, with Alvernia posting 23 shots and the Spartans putting up 22.

The Crusaders got on the board with 13 minutes left in the first half thanks to a goal from Margaret Wentzel (East Earl, Pa./Garden Spot), her third of the season.  Wentzel then assisted on Alvernia's second goal as she brought the ball up the left side of the field in a breakway, and passed it across the circle to Summer Liberto (Severna Park, Md./Archbishop Spalding) who finished with a nifty shot over the York goalie to put Alvernia up 2-0 with seven minutes left in the first half.

The next three goals of the game came within five minutes.  York opened the second half scoring with a goal nine minutes into the second half to cut Alvernia's lead in half, 2-1.  The Crusaders answered with their third goal of the game less than three minutes later as Liberto managed her second goal of the game after collecting the ball off the goalie's pads and redirecting it into the net for the 3-1 lead.  Two minutes later the Spartans struck again to make it 3-2 in favor of Alvernia, but despite 13 second half shots couldn't manage the equalizer.

Crusader goalkeeper Rebecca Brosius (Drexel Hill, Pa./Archbishop Carrol) played all 70 minutes in goal, tallying 11 saves.

Alvernia is back in action when they host Juniata College on Sat. Oct. 5th at 1:00pm.
