Margaret Wentzel (East Earl, Pa./Garden Spot) scored two goals and assisted on a third as Alvernia University (7-3) came back from a 2-0 deficit for a 3-2 win over Juniata College (5-7) Saturday afternoon in non-conference field hockey action at Alvernia.
The Eagles scored in the 11th minute when Kortney Showers ripped home her first of the season. They took a 2-0 lead with four minutes left in the first half when Steph Pagliaro scored her first goal of the season on a rebound.
Alvernia went into the half trailing 2-0 but cut the gap in half when Wentzel scored in the 44th minute.
Natalie Messaros (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) took a shot from the right that was cleared off the line by an Eagle defender right to Wentzel who drove through traffic for her fourth of the season.
Six minutes later Wentzel set up Messaros for the game-tying goal. She stole the ball from a Juniata defender and beat the goalie with a shot that made it to the goal mouth. Messaros outraced another Juniata defender and pushed home a shot on a diving effort.
Wentzel scored the game-winner in the 61st minute. She took the ball down the left wing on a breakaway and took a shot that the Juniata goalie saved. Wentzel beat the defense to the rebound and pushed it home for her second of the game.
Rebecca Brosious (Drexel Hill, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) played the second half in net for the Crusaders and made give saves for the win--including a sliding save with the pads stacked late.
