Alvernia Earns ECAC Bid

Crusaders Seeded #8, Head To #1 Drew Wednesday

Reading, Pa. (Nov. 11, 2013) – Alvernia University has earned the #8 seed in the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Region Field Hockey Tournament and will travel to top-seeded Drew University for a quarterfinal match-up on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.

The Crusaders went 11-7 in the regular season and earned their fifth straight invitation to the ECAC Championships.  This is the second time Alvernia will travel to Drew University for a quarterfinal game.  The Crusaders were seeded sixth in 2010 and lost 3-2 to #3 Drew, which finished runner-up with a finals loss to Catholic University.

Drew is entering this year's championship with a record of 16-3 and coming off a Landmark Final loss to Catholic in overtime.  Drew opened the season with nine straight wins before suffering a 2-1 loss to King's College on October 9.  Its second loss of the season came at the hands of Montclair St.—the top team in the nation.  It followed with five straight wins including a 4-2 win over Juniata on the final day of the regular season to clinch the top seed in the Landmark Championships.

The Rangers are led by Sam Barcia who has 27 goals this season and ranks fifth in the nation in goals per game.  CC Carlini has started all 19 games in net for the Rangers with a 1.27 goals against average.

Alvernia is led by freshman Margaret Wentzel (East Earl, Pa./Garden Spot) with 16 goals.  She was named First Team All-Commonwealth as a forward.  Junior goalie Erin Wunsch (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) has a 2.26 goals against average for the Crusaders.

The ECAC Final Four is scheduled for this Saturday and Sunday at the highest remaining seed.
