Kelly's OT Game-Winner Sends #8 Alvernia To ECAC Semifinal

Alvernia Defeats #1 Drew, 4-3

BOX SCORE

Madison, N.J. (Nov. 13, 2013) - Sophomore Emily Kelly (Westminster, Md./Seton Keough) scored her first career goal 4:31 into overtime leading eighth-seeded Alvernia University (12-7) to a 4-3 win over #1 Drew University (16-4) Wednesday evening in the quarterfinals of the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Region Championships at Drew.

The Rangers staked themselves to a 3-1 lead 11 minutes into the second half.  Alvernia freshman Alexis Klopp (Bernville, Pa./Tulpehocken) connected on a penalty corner three minutes later assisted by Melanie Lowry (Gap, Pa./Octorara) to cut the gap in half.  The Crusaders looked to have the game-tying goal on a Lowry shot in the 63rd minute, but a green card was given to the Rangers instead of a goal to the Crusaders.

Freshman Margaret Wentzel (East Earl, Pa./Garden Spot) fired a shot wide in the 65th minute then connected on a pass from senior Kyle Dillman (Hershey, Pa./Lower Dauphin) to tie the score at 3-3 with 4:34 left in regulation.

The overtime period was back and forth over the first four minutes with Alvernia junior Erin Wunsch (West Lawn, Pa./Wilson) making a terrific save on a redirection by Rangers' leading scorer Sam Barcia three minutes into the extra frame.  Play returned back to the Crusaders' offensive end with a pass making it through to the Drew goalie.  Kelly knocked down the clear attempt and was in alone for the game-winner.

Wunsch finished the night with 12 saves and Lowry posted a defensive save.  Wentzel had two goals for the Crusaders.

Alvernia moves on to its fifth ECAC semifinal and will face #4 Kean on Saturday at 1:30.  Kean will host the Final Four with #6 Delaware Valley facing off against #2 Stevens in the other semifinal at 11:00 a.m.  The final will be at Kean on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
