Crusaders Split With Stevenson

Weinhold Earns Game One Win

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2

Reading, Pa. (Mar. 17, 2013) –  Alvernia University (9-4, 2-1) split a doubleheader with Stevenson University (12-5, 1-2) Sunday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference baseball action at Angelica Park.  Alvernia took the opener 16-0 and Stevenson responded with a 2-1 win in game two.

Alvernia junior Mike Weinhold (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weiser) went six shutout innings in the opener and the Mustangs scratched out single runs in the first and the seventh innings of game two.

The Crusaders plated six runs in the first inning of game one on five hits and one Stevenson error.  The Crusaders sent 11 batters to the plate and sophomore Rory Clemens (Harleysville, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) delivered a two-run single.

Weinhold was brilliant through six innings giving up just a pair of hits and striking out four.  Rich Collins (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) threw a scoreless seventh to close the game.  The Mustangs had only one runner reach second base against Weinhold through six innings and Kevin Wu stroked a pinch-hit double against Collins in the seventh but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple.

Offensively, five different batters had at least two hits for the Crusaders.  Junior Chris Gehris (Sinking Spring, Pa./Holy Name) went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs.  Leon Stimpson (Philadelphia, Pa./Malvern Prep) went 2-for-3 with four runs and a pair of RBIs.

Alvernia tacked on a pair of unearned runs in the third inning then blew it open with a 5-run fifth highlighted by Gehris' two-run double.

Sophomore starter Steve Price (Barto, Pa./Boyertown) walked the leadoff man in game two.  He stole second and came around to scored on consecutive groundouts.  The Crusaders responded with a single run in the second against Greg Myers.  Gehris opened the inning with a single, his fifth straight hit of the day, took second on a Billy Turner (Columbia, N.J./North Warren Regional) single and scored when the Stevenson shortstop booted a throw on a force play at second.

Price struck out the side in the second and worked around single base runners in each inning from the third through the sixth.  Alvernia had runners on with one-out singles in the fourth and sixth, but couldn't get past second base.

The Crusaders turned the ball over to Kevin Becker-Menditto (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) in a tie game in the seventh.  He walked designated hitter Ian Eberly with one out.  Eberly moved up on a ground ball to first and scored from second on an infield single up the middle.  Alvernia second baseman Brock Martin (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) knocked the ball down and recovered in time to have a shot at Eberly at the plate, but the ball skipped away from catcher Kevin Bailey (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) in a collision with Eberly a bit up the line.

Myers closed the game himself getting the Crusaders in order in the bottom of the seventh.  Each team finished with four base hits.  Alvernia got hits from four different players in the lineup.

The Crusaders return to action Tuesday at Kean.
