Annville, Pa. (Apr. 13, 2013) - Alvernia University (21-8, 11-3) posted a 5-run inning in game one and slammed the door with the game-tying run at 3rd in game two of a doubleheader sweep at Lebanon Valley College (9-18, 3-11) Saturday afternoon in Commonweatlh Conference baseball action.
Down 3-0 in the fifth inning of game one, the Crusaders batted around and scored five times on five hits and an error on their way to a 5-3 win. Facing a 1-0 deficit in the fourth inning of game two,
Richie Ricciardi (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) doubled in a run to tie the score, and two innings later
Matt Patterson (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham) scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.
The Dutchmen got the potential tying run to second base with one out in game one and third base with one out in game two, but Alvernia closer
Kevin Becker-Menditto (Walkersville, Md./Frederick) slammed the door both times to pick up saves six and seven and tie the career record with his 16th save.
In game one Becker-Menditto threw six straight stikes for back-to-back strikeouts. In game two freshman catcher
Chris Burns (Cherry Hill, N.J./Holy Cross) threw out pinch-runner Korey Johnson trying to steal second and Becker-Menditto ended it with a comebacker to the mound.
Leon Stimpson (Philadelphia, Pa./Malvern) plated the first run with a bases-loaded single and
Chris Ray (Exton, Pa./West Chester Henderson) and
Billy Turner (Columbia, N.J./North Warren Regional) both followed with 2-run singles.
Aaron Benusis (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) went four and a third innings giving up three runs and earned the win in game one.
Mike Weinhold (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weiser) struck out 13 in six innings in game two to earn the win.
Turner went 3-for-4 in the opener then had one hit in a pinch hit appearace in game two.
Both teams finish the 3-game series Sunday afternoon at Alvernia.
